Yeah - I did that with the spellings. Like I shared earlier in the week, while I am posting pretty much every day with the Psalms, I am not going to email them out every day (I don’t want to assume you want me in your inbox every day) but I am going to post a Psummary (again, see what I did there?) each Psaturday and I’ll probably widely share several in between along the way. Anyway, this is the week that I started this new journey through the Psalms guided by Norman Fischer’s book, Opening To You: A Zen Translation of the Psalms. I started this on Tuesday with Psalm 1 and then shared Psalm 5 this morning. So here are each of the days if you want to click through. Psalm 6 will be posted tomorrow morning.
Back to the Beginning...Returning to the Psalms
There’s a scene in the latter third of The Princess Bride where Inigo, the Spanish swordsman, is found having gone “back to the beginning” after other plans had fallen apart. Like with the whole of the movie, it is both beautifully emotional and darn funny.
Psalm 3 - Torment, Not Tormentors
Just jumping right in...I am not a fan of the vengeaful language that shows up in many of the Psalms. Psalm 3 (NRSV) ends in this way.
Psalm 4 - Dognertia
We have created a phrase in our house...dognertia. Dognertia refers to when Scout cuddles up next to us and somehow her super power starts to kick in where it is suddenly a lot harder to get out of bed or eyelids get heavier...etc. Dognertia. I went to dognertia with Psalm 4 today. After a couple of Psalms in a row that were a bit rougher around the edg…
Psalm 5 - Contrasts (and unsayableness)
I wish I could post the whole of Psalm 5 from Fischer’s version but I saw something in how he wrote it that I had not seen in this Psalm before. It is a series of contrasts between the one trying to follow God’s way and the “heedless” as Fischer translates it (rather than “the wicked” or “evil”).
So far, I am finding these new ways of hearing the Psalms to be beautifully life giving. A theme I have felt thus far is a beautiful openness and challenging to different ways of viewing others and viewing experiences.
Off to reflect on Psalm 6 to share tomorrow. :-)
Grace, Peace, Love, and Joy,
Ed
