I think the Sermon on the Mount is and was an effort to capsulize his teachings into one powerful seminar with enough ummpf to stir the hearts of his disciples. They needed some self-confidence and the Holy Spirit had plenty to gift to them. I'm sure his apostles were there, but how many disciples were there? Maybe 20 give or take a few? Yet, it was delivered in a way that doubt was removed and shined up to last a few months or so.
