The Second Gaze - Signs
Two of these are not like the others... Yesterday, I took photos of a lot of different signs, a few of which are in the grid on the left side of the photo. I was somewhat inspired by the song “Signs” (covered by Tesla) which has a chorus of
Signs Signs
Everywhere there's signs
[Messing] up the scenery
Breaking my mind
Do this, don't do that
Can't you read the sign?"Signs" covered by Tesla, originally by The Five Man Acoustical Jam
That’s somewhat how I felt about the signs that I saw. They weren’t necessarily [messing] up the scenery but there was a lot of “do this, don’t do that.” (All of which I agree with by the way). As a result, I was initially “second-gazing” about how we do need direction and guidance in life.
This morning, however, that changed as I saw these two painted stones left on signs where Scout and I were out walking. I have loved seeing these types of surprises over the last year or so. The heart on one and the hug emoji on the other just made me smile and were a sign of a different sort. They weren’t signs of “do this, don’t do that” but instead were signs of blessing, of love, of joy, of surprise, of gift.
Yes there are “signs” on our path of faith that are “do this, don’t do that” but there’s lots of other signs that God puts there that are simply to remind us of how much God loves the world, how much God loves each person, and how we are called to love and care for this world and for one another.
This will be a sign for you...
