The Second Gaze - Found
“Found” was found in a Metallica lyric...Lots was stirring for me yesterday with the theme of “Found.” I was initially looking for something I’d find on a walk but nothing seemed to emerge for me. A friend of mine posted on FB an excellent question of whether something needs to be lost before it can be “found”...But even with both of those things stirring in my heart, I kept hearing a lyric in my head. It was simply, “Found in you.” I did some online searches and what came up were some recent worship songs with the title but when I looked at them, I found that it wasn’t them.
It wasn’t until this morning when I realized where it came from (and that I had the lyric a little bit off). It is from a song called Nothing Else Matters by Metallica. The line I was remembering actually says, “trust I seek and I find in you, every day for us something new.” This is one of my favorite Metallica songs as it (in a very heavy metal way) focuses on relationships and a longing for what we find in them, especially when we are apart.
In a recent interview about the song, frontman James Hetfield said this...
It was a song for myself in my room on tour when I was bumming out about being away from home. It's quite amazing, it's a true testament to honesty and exposing yourself, putting your real self out there, and taking the risk, taking a gamble that someone's either going to step on your heart with spikes on or they're going to put their heart right next to it, and you never know until you try.

There’s something powerful that we find when we put ourselves out there to others. But we will never know until we actually do. It has taken me a long time to be open and vulnerable with others (and I still struggle with it) but I have found so many more times when someone “puts their heart next to my real self” rather than “stepping on it with spikes.”
But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us.
2 Corinthians 4:7
So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters
Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters
Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know
So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know
I never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters
Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters
Never cared for what they say
Never cared for games they play
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know
So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
No nothing else matters
