The Second Gaze - Bread
“Give us this day our daily bread.”
Yesterday was the first of our Sunday themes for Lent - looking for God in the ordinary. My sermon was tied to the prayer that Jesus teaches as a part of the sermon on the mount in Matthew 6 which has been adapted into what we now call the Lord’s Prayer. But specifically the line...”Give us this day our daily bread.” The crux of the message was that Jesus meets us in the most ordinary of events, moments, times, situations, etc of our lives. We often want to look only to the extraordinary, the “instragrammable” moments, but it is in the ordinary and the everyday that we encounter the holy God.
I was still reflecting on the message when I walked into Kroger and walked past the bread and saw the incredible array of breads that filled the shelves. As I looked at the loaves, types, forms, colors, shapes, etc I was simply grateful for the many various and beautiful ways that we encounter God as well.
