Honestly, I didn’t realize that Monday was the Autumn Equinox but I sent a message to my family while out with Scout that it felt like a switch had been flipped and Autumn was here. It was only later that I realized that today was the equinox and the “official” start of Autumn. I don’t know what it was this morning exactly but there was a different feel to the air and a different light and the colors had shifted just enough. I also saw a bunch of leaves had fallen from one of the trees on our street and its leaves were covering our driveway. Click. Autumn.
Shortly after sending the text, I came to this point on the path...I know it was because of the ways that the trees overhang the path but it was such a stark divide...just like Sunday into Monday. Summer into Autumn. Click.
There are so many things working that we do not see. While there are ones out there that are insidious, there are also so many that are stunning and beautiful and life-giving. I’ve shared similar things to this before but on our walk as well there was this single leaf suspended by an unseen spider web (iphone couldn’t focus on the leaf - sorry)
As a person who seeks to follow the Jesus way, I do believe that there is a Spirit working in ways that we see but more often than not, we do not. Others believe in different forces at work but there’s something moving that is benevolent while not always evident and for that I am so grateful.
Another of these moments in recent days. Another heron. But do you see the actual heron?
I didn’t do any editing to this photo - it looks pretty much exactly as it did as I was seeing it on Sunday morning. The heron was silhouetted perfectly against the shadows to where the only evidence of the heron is the reflection in the water. I may not have noticed it at all if the heron hadn’t been moving ever so slowly further out into the light.
So, happy Autumn to you. I am grateful for the switch having been flipped and grateful to enter into my favorite season of the year.
And of course...Scout. I sent this photo to our family group chat...
One of my daughters replied that it looked like Scout was walking into a painting, which it honestly kind of does - there was no editing done to this photo at all.
But being the geek I am, I played around a bit with the oil paint filter on photoshop later in the day and here’s the result. Scout really walking into a painting...(my other daughter replied to this thread with “meep meep”)
Grace, Peace, Love, Hope, and Joy,
Ed
PS - Don’t forget, next Pop Culture Pastors Hour video is Thursday at noon ET. MaryAnn and I will be talking about the Battlestar Galactica miniseries (and I’m going to try to resist spoilers about the rest of the amazing show). So say we all!
You are so right. Yesterday did seem just different. I made a trip to Louisville to pick up some pups and a kitty for SAAP fosters and had some rain on the round trip. But about 4:00 I went to do some outside errands for a vacationing friend and WOW the rain hit just as I was filling the hummingbird feeders. Then a friend and I went to an outdoors Sierra Club meeting and all the way on the drive to Grant’s Lick, KY we were in pouring rain. So our thoughts were that we would get there and there would be no meeting. But as we turned onto the last road…rain had moved on from there long enough for us to have a lovely meeting with NO heat and humidity. A true gift from God.❤️
I love this season too grace peace and love however one lives it 💕
