Psalm Photos - 127 - Children
Psalm 127
If God doesn’t build the house, the builders only build shacks. If God doesn’t guard the city, the night watchman might as well nap. It’s useless to rise early and go to bed late, and work your worried fingers to the bone. Don’t you know he enjoys giving rest to those he loves? Don’t you see that children are God’s best gift? the fruit of the womb his generous legacy? Like a warrior’s fistful of arrows are the children of a vigorous youth. Oh, how blessed are you parents, with your quivers full of children! Your enemies don’t stand a chance against you; you’ll sweep them right off your doorstep.

We have all seen the stickers on the side- or back windows of cars with the little stick family figures. There used to be just simple stick figures, but it has branched out into an incredible variety of ones (prompting this warning from police about them) as you can see from the picture for today. Yes, these stick figures can get a bit over the top (full disclosure - the Star Wars ones are ours), but the diversity of the different figures is a bit representative of the diversity of children around us and the blessing that they each are. I love the lines in this psalm about children being God's best gift. Is it so true. While we can say that, its another thing for us to actually live that out. I struggle so much with what the future holds for the children of today - be it the realities of climate change and the effects upon the planet, the violence that our children are exposed to either through media or in real-life, or the many ways that we continue to cut that which will help build the foundation for the future - education? If we truly believe that this beautiful diversity of children are God's greatest gift, shouldn't we have our actions match our feelings and our words?
