Mark 13 - Walls
Yesterday after worship, a brother shared with me some pics of his hike with his sons. They were a few miles in and came across an old house and an old wall. A house that hadn’t been lived in for a long time most likely and a wall that was starting to crumble. How long had they been there? What was the story behind them? Who lived there? Did they abandon it?
But regardless of the story, the walls aren’t standing up to the forces of nature around them. They may have stood strong and solid at one point but no longer.
Mark 13 begins with Jesus and his friends walking out of the temple and one of them commenting on the majestic building and the size of the stones that made it up. And I am sure he was right - from what I have read of what that temple must have looked like, it must have been stunning. However, Jesus responds about how one day even though those stones were great and the building majestic, the temple will one day be destroyed. Reminds me of Isaiah 40:8 - the grass withers and the flowers fade, but the Word of the Lord stands forever.
