John 6 - To Whom Shall We Go?
This morning, I read a verse that I heard in a way probably different from how it was intended but it has stuck with me all day. In John 6:68, Peter asks Jesus, “Lord, to whom shall we go?” I know I am pulling a verse out of context but that question has been rattling around in my heart and mind because I saw the news about the mosques in Christchurch, NZ and the horror and the brutality and the hate that was in evidence there. It doesn’t feel like it in John 6, but that question has felt like a lament for me all day. A pleading - Lord, to whom shall we go? I’m tired of all this. I’m tired of people dying in the way that the women, children, and men died in the mosques as they worshipped. I’m tired of schools setting up one way glass (like at the school administration building I was at this morning) so visitors can’t see in but those inside can see out. I’m tired of kids having to do active shooter and lockdown drills in school. I’m tired of the normalization of hate and supremacist thought. I’m lamenting with these words, “Lord to whom shall we go?”
