Imago Scriptura 69 - Job 19:25-27 - Glimpses
In the midst of the dialogues between Job and his friends and in the midst of the "piling on" that I wrote about, we come to probably the most well known of the passages in Job. After all, it forms a significant part of Handel's Messiah - a stunning piece.
For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth; and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me!
This is a stunning statement in the midst of everything else that has been said to this point. Job has been railing against his friends, frustrated with God and the lack of answers (or even a response) to this point.
It feels that Job has been looking for that glimpse of God in the midst of the circumstances. The glimpse of light shining in the darkness. Maybe it is just words that he is saying to just keep saying them so he doesn't lose belief. Maybe its simply a hope that he is holding to. Who knows. But it is stunning to come to in the midst of everything else that has come before.
Like I shared in my other post about walking with people through challenging circumstances, I have likewise seen people who are able to have the most amazing insights and hope even when facing odds that look impossible. People who hold to hope even when the logical or natural thing to do is despair. Job has an ultimate hope that is still burning while still acknowledging the reality of the situation.
Its a lot like what I try to do with these posts in my life each day (or most days) - keeping to finding the light no matter what. Finding the wonder of God, the glimpses of the Christ, the movements of the Spirit - each day no matter what. For I do know that my redeemer lives and no matter what happens, I will see God, the one who has always been on my side. And yes, my heart faints within me not only in the future but right now.
