Imago Scriptura 29 - Finished
I am not sure that "love" is exactly the right term, but I do love the power of the Good Friday service. Love is a strange word to describe the service, but it is one of the most meaningful services for me in the course of the year. It speaks to me on so many different levels - if the depth of God’s love and forgiveness, the ways that I continue to need to grow in my discipleship, and the incredible gift that it all is. But there is also the deep sorrow about what is underneath the whole thing. There is a definite solemnity to the entire experience.
This morning, I read the final three chapters of Joshua including probably the most well-known passage in the book -Joshua 24:14-15 -
“Now therefore revere the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. Now if you are unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
Leading up to this though is a series of exhortations and challenges from Joshua to the people pushing them to a deeper commitment to God. He doesn’t sugar coat it but lays it out straight - just like I feel about Good Friday. There’s no sugar coating what this day is about. Its a hard story and a necessary story but ultimately the story upon which history turned.
It is finished.
