Both my visits were right before Mandela was freed so you saw many things that were not in existence when I was there. Yes, there are many lessons to be learned from the things you saw.
Have you read Lisa-Jo Baker's book It wasn't Roaring, it was Weeping? She grew up in SA and is an amazing storyteller
