BIAY - Psalm 53:2-3 - What Does God See?
Psalm 53:2-3 says, “God looks down from heaven on humankind to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God. They have all fallen away, they are all alike perverse; there is no one who does good, no, not one.”
What does God see when God looks at the world today? I know there is a lot that undoubtedly makes God sad, angry, and frustrated. Sin lived out in wars, systemic poverty and racism, division, hatred, and the list goes on. I sure don’t feel great about the state of the world right now so I cannot imagine how the Creator feels about it.
But there are glimpses of something different. Yesterday morning, I was walking along the Ohio River at sunrise before an early meeting when a group of UC students came out of a building I was walking past. As I passed them, a young woman pulled this bunch of flowers out of a bunch she was holding and handed them to me simply saying, “these are for you.” They all headed on quickly and I didn’t get a chance to ask why. Then I looked at them and the blue ribbon holding the stems together and I had a pretty good idea of why she was sharing them - an act of remembrance for Ukraine.
I then left these flowers at the coffee house where my meeting was. I added a note asking people to take a moment to pray or think about the war in Ukraine and those taking place in other parts of the world. It isn’t a big thing but it is something. So these flowers with the sunrise are a visual prayer that a new day could dawn for our world.
