BFTJ - September 13 - Hold onto Jesus
Fragility - that’s what I heard in the words of Nouwen in his devotional words from the other day. He was commenting on the fragility of life as we look at all the things happening around us - referring to the words from Luke 21 about wars, conflict, famines, and so forth. What I heard in those words were fragility - that life is not as set and laid out as we would like it to be. Yes we can try to find security, but that security can be fleeting with things that are both within and beyond our controls. He said in the devotion on September 11, that need to be “faithful disciples of Jesus, never losing touch with our true spiritual selves.”
As I write this, I think of the words from the Steven Curtis Chapman song, Hold onto Jesus -
I have come to this ocean And the waves of fear are starting to grow The doubts and questions are rising with the tide So I'm clinging to the one sure thing I know
I will hold on to the hand of my Savior And I will hold on with all my might I will hold loosely to things that are fleeting And hold on to Jesus I will hold on to Jesus for life
I've tried to hold many treasures They just keep slipping through my fingers like sand But there's one treasure that means more than breath itself So I'm clinging to it with everything I am
[Chorus] Like a child holding on to a promise I will cling to His word and believe As I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me Hold on for life
Like this leaf that is just resting upon another, seemingly able to move with the slightest breeze, so our lives can feel like this. But hold on. Hold onto Jesus. Hold onto Jesus for life.
