A Place at the Table - 20 - Bread
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

The food theme continues. Today, Seay’s focus is on the daily bread part of the Lord’s Prayer - remembering that the Exodus story tells of how God provided the manna in the desert for the day’s food, but not beyond. Jesus speaks of the lilies of the field and the birds of the air receiving what they need each day. We think a lot about tomorrow, and the next day, the next month, the next year, the next decade. But we don’t have control over those things (not that we really have control over today either). However, the call is to trust in God’s provision, trust in God’s resources, and to receive what God gives for our needs.
As I type this though, I struggle as I am looking at a loaf of banana bread that my wife made last night. I look at the banana sitting in the fruit basket next to me. I look at the food waiting to go in the oven for dinner. I think of the fact that I just asked my wife to get ice cream at the store. There’s a lot of “daily bread” there. What about the child who doesn’t have enough to eat just around the corner here in Cincinnati. What about the child across the world who doesn’t have the daily bread they need?
