As I just wrote for something that will be posted in a few weeks, we are neck deep in what the church calendar refers to as “Ordinary Time.” I feel that with the bench right now. With the days getting hotter (and this week ahead - yikes), I’ve been getting out earlier and earlier with Scout. Meaning that I’m already well back at home by 7:45. The other thing about 7:45 right now is that the days pretty much look the same - cloudy or sunny, pretty much the same. So, in addition to those “ordinary” ones that you’ll see, how about one that is a bit different.
The other morning I was out really early and I did as I usually do when we walk by the bench. I asked Scout to hop up. Normally, she ignores it with a look that says to me, “Um...why?” Well, something about the other day was different and she hopped on up! She even stayed there for me to go back behind it for another photo.
She’s the best. Seriously.
That same morning also brought a really unique moment for me. The low hanging fog on the waters slowly moving around on the surface of the waters was illuminated by the just-rising sun and it looked like tiny flames of fire dancing on the surface. Just lovely.
And then a bit of a grief and sadness for me. I posted this photo a week or so ago of this mother duck and her nine ducklings tagging along.
Well, I am not 100% sure it is the same ones, but there’s a mother duck swimming around the same areas the last few days with only 7 ducklings. I hope it is a different family but I am pretty sure they’re the same ones, meaning that two have been lost to something. Just made me a little sad.
But they had a moment today that was really adorable that I recorded with the camera of my memory. The mother was in the water and the seven ducklings were all up on the edge of the water. As Scout and I approached (and we were not even close), they each jumped in and swam to mom faster than I have ever seen ducklings swim. There was a guy fishing there nearby as well and a couple on the path above who also saw the same thing. We were all laughing about how cute it all was. So a smile even as I grieve the two that have been lost.
Grace, Peace, Love, and Joy,
Ed
