Observing Advent - Day 04 - Time

Observing Advent - Day 04 - Time My initial inclination today was to take some kind of picture of a clock, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought…nah. So you might look at this picture and wonder what this has to do with time…well, while the church operates on the traditional calendar of Jan-Dec, it also operates in its worship life in a different calendar and time is measured differently. The time of the worship life of the church is measured by the seasons of the year and the Holy Days observed. We are in the season of Advent now, represented by the liturgical color of purple. Days like Christmas and Easter use a color of White. Lent is also represented as purple. Other seasons such as Pentecost have different colors. The majority of the year is called “ordinary time” (I’ve never been a big fan of that name) and is represented by green - reflecting the growth that we are called to continue to have during that time. The purple of Advent and Lent represents the kingship of Christ. The red of Pentecost represents the Fire of the Holy Spirit and so forth. What difference would it make in your life if you also measured your days through the worship calendar of the church? If a day in “ordinary time” begins with the question, “God, how will you grow me / stretch me today?” or on a day in Lent the question is asked, “what does it mean that you are the king of my life?”
